Where criminal charges and civil matters (such as employment issues) arise together, the team at Cloherty & Steinberg LLP has the expertise needed to defend and advocate in complex situations, and to obtain the best possible outcome on all fronts.
The firm’s government investigation practice is led by Partner Daniel Cloherty, who has represented businesses and individuals in Massachusetts state and federal proceedings for more than two decades. Mr. Cloherty has successfully assisted numerous clients involved in government investigations conducted by federal and state agencies, in response to grand jury subpoenas, in pre- and post-indictment proceedings, and, when necessary, at jury trials. His clients include businesses and individuals under investigation for a wide range of conduct, including matters involving allegations of securities fraud, health care fraud, academic research misconduct, tax-related offenses, money laundering and other federal and state offenses. Mr. Cloherty also regularly represents clients before the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the Massachusetts Securities Division. An experienced trial lawyer, Mr. Cloherty cares deeply about helping businesses and individuals avoid the dire repercussions that can arise out of criminal prosecution, and he understands how government investigations can reach all aspects of clients’ lives, including their relationships, families, professional lives, financial well-being, reputation, and immigration status.
Mr. Cloherty is also currently serving as Chair of the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Act Board. In this capacity, he assists the Federal District Court for the District of Massachusetts in its oversight and administration of the CJA Panel, attorneys who represent indigent defendants through appointment by the Court. The CJA Board liaises with the Court on matters including relevant Court practices and policies, as well as issues of concern to the criminal defense bar.
